WHAT IS A DENTAL
IMPLANT ?
A dental implant (1) is an
artificial tooth root that can be made of either
titanium or zirconia. Our
Centre does not use titanium.
Once inserted in the jawbone, the
surrounding bone grows and firmly attach to the
implant. After the corresponding healing period,
a structure called an abutment (2) is attached to
the implant, if it is a two phase implant*. The
actual custom made metal-free crown (3) or bridge
is then applied to this structure. Even if all
the teeth are missing, implants serve as a
support for the crown and bridge, or for
removable dentures. In this way, your teeth can
be restored functionally and aesthetically. For
you as a patient, this means that you can once
again bite into food carefree, and that you can
smile without worry. Implants in general are a
very stable base for your dental prosthetics, and
in terms of functionality, they counteract
natural bone decline.
In addition, since we only use IDM
| ZIRCONIA implants, their natural white color
provides ideal conditions for aesthetically
outstanding results. We do not use any metal on
the zirconia implants so the risks associated
with titanium and other metals are completely
avoided. CLICK

ZIRCONIA implants are available in two types*.
One phase and two phase implants.
A ONE
PHASE IMPLANT
IS AN IMPLANT IN ONE PIECE: The root and
the abutment that will support the crown are in
one piece so that the abutment will be visible
above the gum during the healing period. The
abutment cannot be removed.
ADVANTAGES:
Less parts so less expensive.
Some designs are anatomically closer in
shape to the natural teeth roots that
they are meant to replace. No metal
mediated inflammatory response or immune
effects. |
DISADVANTAGES:
The abutment is exposed above
the gum so requires protection from
premature loading by wearing a removable
protective guard. The abutment is not
removable so therefore 1) cannot be
replaced by a different type of abutment
2) cannot be replaced if damaged 3)
cannot be removed for periodontal therapy,
if necessary. 4) The crown is glued on so
not removable just like on a natural
tooth. 5) limitations with angles. |
A
TWO PHASE IMPLANT
IS IN TWO OR MORE PIECES: The root and
the abutment are separate. This allows the root
to be placed under the gum so it can heal
undisturbed. The abutment is only attached to the
root once the bone is firmly attached to that
root. This also make it possible to wear a
partial denture, if necessary, during the healing
period. In addition a two phase implant offer the
choice of a fixed or removable abutment. We use Zeramex
Ceramic Implants as they
are the most advanced and considered to be the
new benchmark in dental implantology.
ADVANTAGES:
The most versatile type of implant. The
option of a fully removable and
replaceable abutment. Various types of
abutments can be used and changed as
necessary so more future proof. A
removable abutment can also offer a
choice of a crown that can be either
cemented on the removable abutment or can
be screwed in with the abutment providing
greater retrievability, if required. No
metal mediated inflammatory response or
immune effects. |
DISADVANTAGES: More parts
so more expensive. The screwable zirconia
abutment with carbon fibre screws is the
most versatile so the added cost is worth
it. |

IMPORTANT:
ONCE THEY
ARE INTEGRATED WITH THE BONE, DENTAL
IMPLANTS ARE VERY STABLE BUT ALSO VERY
DIFFICULT TO REMOVE. THEY ARE IN FACT
MUCH MORE DIFFICULT TO REMOVE THAN A
NATURAL TOOTH. IT IS THEREFORE IMPERATIVE
THAT YOU CAREFULLY CONSIDER THE CHOICE OF
MATERIALS USED FOR THE IMPLANT,
ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE TO METALS.
